Sir,

I am still trying to

It is

I apologise.

I realise this is a very difficult time for Hogwarts. As a Prefect, I hope you know that you can depend on me or any of my fellows to give you whatever aid you require.

As a student who has spent many hours studying Astronomy with

with Professor Sinistra, I understand your pressing and immediate need to sort out what's happened. I am still quite at a loss as to what to think, but if you need to interview me, I will of course be entirely at your disposal. The enormity of it all is quite overwhelming.

And sir, I have had experiences with safely storing the telescope equipment, and as I believe there are no NEWT level students who are Prefects besides Daphne, Seamus, and Linus, and they have quite enough on their plates at the moment, I would like to volunteer my time to help prepare the equipment so that it will not be damaged over winter hols as a result of being exposed to the elements. If access to the tower is not possible, or you require a chaperone or supervisor, I completely understand.

Lastly, I cannot imagine you'll have a spare moment between now and hols to meet for trivial reasons, and I know your time is very precious. Please know that the thought of meeting after hols gives me something to look forward to, which is something to be treasured in times like these.

Most sincerely and with all respect,

Evelyn Longbottom

Sir,

I know this time of year is quite busy for you, but I wanted to make sure and stop by for a last meeting before I leave, and go over the latest translation pieces you've given me to work on. When might be a good time for you? If you're too wrapped up, I can always drop the pieces by your office and we can go over them once we get back, of course. I'd also very much appreciate any suggestions you might have for titles I might be able to track down over hols, as well.

I was wondering if it'd be a good idea to have another get-together in the secret room, as long as everyone was careful, of course.

It's been a while since we did a book exchange, and we could listen to the radio or some music or something, and maybe talk about the graffiti some? And what we might do next?

I was thinking we could invite some more people besides the usual Galleon crowd, too. Maybe.
alt_evelyn: (small yet angry)
did anyone else get a potion from dolohov?

I got a potion. one of the elves delivered it. I asked who it was from and she said it was from the headmaster and I just

did anyone else get one?

is it safe?

I mean he wouldn't send poison. not like that.
alt_evelyn: (Default)
Hello.

I was wondering how you've been?

It's rather odd seeing Mr Milland walk around in the halls, and assign people detention with him, and walk by his office, and know he isn't you. I can remember so very fondly sitting in that chair in the corner and reading while you were writing reports, or going through meditation exercises, and it was just such a warm little place, really.

Lana Sandoval is rather awful, but I suppose you know as much. She leads us in meditative exercises, just like the ones you taught me, and I'm fairly good at it because it's something I'm used to doing every day, but because I do it right before bed, I tend to drift off and fall asleep during, which annoys her. It doesn't take much, though, and I'm far from the only one.

I've been hard at work sorting out reams of Arithmancy with Jeremy and Professor Sinistra. Sometimes, I get so involved in it that I dream in numbers and spiralling patterns, but I find them rather beautiful, and it feels like everything makes a little more sense when I wake up. I've also started learning Arabic by using some children's books that have rhymes and songs that are frightfully catchy. I think I'll learn Hebrew next. Some things are far easier this term, especially with Kitty and Artie in the Order, but it's still hard to sort out where my place is in everything. I still can't believe I'm a Prefect. It's rather terrifying sometimes, to be noticed like that.

Anyways. I was doing my rounds tonight, and found myself in a familiar hallway, and realised just how much I missed knocking on your office door. Hogwarts is a little lonelier without you in it.

I very much hope you are doing well.

Sincerely,

Evelyn.

Have the 3rd year girls been fighting? They all look quite sour today, and Alexa Bawsley was particularly unhappy-looking and tired. I asked her if she needed to go see the Matron, and she practically bit my head off, saying she had things 'well in hand, thank you very much.'

Anyways. Something to keep an eye on? I tutor Jude in Arithmancy, I was thinking of asking her what was going on, but I don't know too many of the others in that year as well as I ought.

When will you have the new numbers in, do you think?

I've finally finished the iterations for the first piece of the formula. I've shown it to Professor Sinistra so she can double-check my work, because I feel like I've finally caught the hang of it only the fact it's been going so quickly has made me second-guess things, and once she's looked it over, I can send it along.

I think it's sort of mad that I'm

There's a part of me that is sad that we won't be able to write it up properly and tell people what we've done. Not for a while, anyways. And I've been reading up as much as I can on potential energy formulas, and I understand about a quarter of it. Or at least I think I do.

I hope these new readings are what we expect, I really do.
alt_evelyn: (Default)
I've read about auroras and what creates them, and I know it's a phenomenon that's perfectly straightforward in theory, but the colours

They really are quite stunning.

I don't think I've ever seen that shade of green before.

It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
alt_evelyn: (seriousy4)
I've told Brendan already, but I thought I'd pass along to you both that Hangleford and Pandya got off to a rough start. Hangleford is the thin boy with curly brown hair, and Pandya wears glasses. I don't think it's too dire, but they did get into a shoving match about something on the train where Pandya's glasses were broken and had to be fixed, and neither were pleased at all to be sorted into the same house.

I also wanted to thank you both for being so welcoming on the train today. It's a shame we had to leave off so soon. I very much look forward to working with you this term, as does Brendan, I'm sure.

I did it! I finally did it! I'd been thinking about what it would be like for ages and ages, and I was practicing with dad, and I felt this pull, and then I was halfway across the field and it was brilliant! And then I managed it again! And we're going to try going longer distances tomorrow, and I can't wait.

There's nothing much to report from the Forest this week. We found part of a grindylow on the edge of the swamp, and a decent sized patch of asphodel, but other than that, we didn't come across anything. Next week, the plan is to walk around the swamp to map it out so we can go deeper in. Depending. Nev comes of age next Wednesday, so we're still waiting to see what'll happen with that.

And. I've been talking with Kitty and Artie. They both wrote me yesterday about Sirius's Grim Truth, and when we've had the chance to get together over hols so far, they've had a lot of questions about what happened with Draco, and what Harry talked about at the end of term, and they want to know more.

I don't know whether they think that I know more than they do or not. When we talk, it's mostly as if we're all in the dark together, but every now and then they'll talk around things rather than face them head on, especially when it comes to anything about mum and dad. I can't blame them. I watch what I say too, after all. And they very might well suspect something, but if I started asking them about it, well, I figured it'd be best to run things by you lot first.

It's more than a little frustrating at times. To have to be careful.

But we do talk about the Protectorate, and how awful and scary things are, and about what we've been getting up to at school, and what the radio says, and we talk about what it's like for them as halfbloods, and what it's like for me as whatever I am. And I've told them what I think about things, what I think is right and wrong, and what's unfair and why, because I don't have to lie about that part, and from what I can sort out, they think the same sorts of things.

Kitty's been my best friend ever since I started at Hogwarts, really. She's brave and strong and endlessly kind, and she told me when we first got to know each other that she'd never be ashamed of her parents. Artie is quiet, and all sorts of shy, but he's brilliant. He goes on and on about intellectual freedom when you get him on a tear, and he's just been so proud to be a part of the Galleon group, and when news came out about McClaggen's brother, he stood up in front of everyone in the Great Hall and walked over and held my hand.

I want to tell them more. And I think they're ready for it.

I'm only wondering how best to go about it.

Might we have a meeting, like Sally-Anne did with Daphne? It's just that

Well, once I tell them that I'm involved in something much bigger, there's no going back, really, and I trust them both to the ends of the earth and back again, but I want to make sure when I open that door that it's all right with everyone and everything's proper and safe.

We went to the Forest yesterday. We were being followed, of course, but no-one came out to challenge us, so I suppose Firenze spread the word about Wednesdays. There's not a lot to report. We stopped at our usual places but didn't linger for too long, gathered some more mushrooms for Mr Snape, and took the chance to explore some areas we hadn't had the chance to fill in on the map yet.

We stumbled across a swamp of sorts. It was muddy and damp and had dark pools of water. It smelled sort of sulphurous, and we weren't sure about how stable the ground was, so we didn't venture in or stay for very long. We think there might be hinkypunks, and grindylows might live in the deeper pools, so we're planning on bringing wellies and Nev can borrow pair of Uncle Archie's fishing waders for next time. Don't worry. We'll be careful.

Other than that, things were fairly normal. For the Forbidden forest, that is.

Professor Sinistra,

I know you must be incredibly busy with final exams this week, but I was wondering if I might stop by next week during your office hours to ask about your recommendations for further reading this summer? Katrina Fitzgibbon and I are hoping to continue our project in Arithmancy over summer to see if we can expand it for our OWLs level work, and you've been so helpful about pointing me to additional sources, and I'd like to think about possible projects for Astronomy too.

I enjoyed your class very much this term.

Sincerely,

Evelyn Longbottom

Nothing much happened today.

The thestrals were expecting us, or at least they didn't seem surprised to see us, and they ate up the food we brought them. We didn't run into any acromantulae (or acromantula bits, for that matter), and we checked the Bloodthirsty Briars for any more hair, but nothing turned up. We didn't encounter any centaurs, at least none that we could see, but it still felt like we were being watched so we assumed one of them was following us. We saw a Skrewt, but it was still alive, so we left it well enough alone. Would any bits from a skrewt even be useful?

We went deeper in to see if we could map out some of the other areas and get familiar with them. Luna stumbled across some Deadlyius mushrooms, and Nev knew how to manage them properly so we collected some for Mr Snape before heading home.

Hermione, if you want to meet in the Secret Room to get the portkey back, I can be there before curfew tonight.
alt_evelyn: (seriousy4)
You've just got one more day, Artie.

And I know you really want to ace Charms, and how hard you've been working on it all term, and you'll be just absolutely brilliant in it. You know it forwards and backwards, it's just a matter of showing other people how amazing you are.

I believe in you.

And if you get nervous, remember what we talked about. No matter what happens, we'll face it together. All the way.

Make sure you get some sleep tonight.

love, your Evie.

Sally-Anne, Madame P, could one of you come to the Shack?

Colin got hurt in the Forest. His arm got caught in some Bloodthirsty Briars, and it took a long while to get him untangled from it all, and once we did we kept his arm elevated and wrapped it up to see if we could stop the bleeding, but we were pretty far in, and it took ages to get to Hagrid, and it was getting dark, and we nearly got lost, but we had lanterns, which helped, and when we finally found Hagrid, he carried him the rest of the way because Colin really wasn’t steady on his feet by that point, and I don’t think he’s in a great deal of danger but I don’t think he’ll be able to apparate back to Moddey until he’s been checked out properly.

There was a clump of unicorn hair stuck in the briars, which is why he got wrapped up in them, but he managed to get to them despite everything. I hope they weren't damaged. I don’t think we got any blood on them, but the hair was really tangled and snarled up from the briars.

We also got the leg of an Acromantula. It was right in the middle of the clearing we’d intended to come back to. It was almost like it had been put there. There weren’t any other bits, and no blood or ichor, and it didn’t look like there had been an enormous fight or anything. We were careful, but it didn’t look like a trap either, so we took it with us.
alt_evelyn: (sweet thoughts)
I'm so glad you were able to come along to Moddey yesterday. Isn't it lovely there? I'm going to make earrings out of the shells we found. I think they'd suit Luna very nicely.

And just think. When it's summer, you'll be able to visit whenever you'd like. After you learn Apparation, of course. I'm sure you'll pick up on it quickly enough. I'm so close. If I had another week I know I could do it.

It's too bad we're leaving for Hogwarts on Sunday, because Sunday dinners are the best. It's tradition to have a big meal with everybody, and all the older kids come back for it. Terry, too. Do you know, he told mum at the meeting that Dad was smelling more like he used to? Before he lost his magic? It's funny, I never knew magic had a smell to it like that. I suppose he'd know.

Anyways. I hope you had a good time, and I'm sure I'll see you on the train tomorrow!
alt_evelyn: (seriousy4)
Professor,

I'm frightfully sorry, but I'm feeling under the weather, and Gran wants me to stay home today, so I won't be able to attend your salon. It's nothing a bit of Pepper-up and rest won't cure, but I am not at my best, and Gran is putting her foot down, and if you've ever met her, you'd know that once she's made up her mind on something, it's best to not put up a fight.

I was very much looking forward to coming as it sounded quite interesting, and like such a wonderful opportunity. Will there be other meetings this summer?

I hope you and Professor Lestrange had a good Easter weekend.

Sincerely,

Evelyn Longbottom

I'm in.

It took some doing to get down to the tunnels. There were loads of people by the lift making a lot of noise. But one of the men who came to fetch me -- Mr Luke -- he shouted a lot and said I was Frank Longbottom's daughter, and they let us pass.

There's a lot of dust. It's hard to breathe. Colin and Neville are taking turns keeping Shielding charms on the ceiling in case more rocks fall.

We have to move the rocks slowly so they won't shift around.

They still haven't found dad. Wendy King is missing too. And they found one guard, but not the other.
